Two charged with murdering couple taste freedom

• 05 Apr 2007 •

TWO of the five men arrested for the murder of a German couple in their chalet in Chilches,  Velez-Malaga, have been freed, although the charges still stand against them.

The accused – all foreigners – were held in prison in late January after being charged with murder, burglary and illegal ownership of weapons. One of two now released, who is accused of having harboured the others, denied having been in Malaga on the day of the crime, with this supported by several Granada businessmen who testified in his defence.

At the time of the original arrests it was stated that the men were believed to belong to a group specialising in organised crime, including violent robberies.

Two of the accused are believed to have been  banned from entering the European Union, and another facing four arrest warrants.

The murdered couple – a 70-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife - were found shot to death in their home days after police believe they accepted a cash deposit for the sale of their property.
