Helping the ‘Little Gems’ of Nepal

• 05 Apr 2007 •

THE Little Gems Hostel for Girls is located in Khokana, about have-an-hour’s drive from Kathmandu. Valerie Tigges and Steve Hirst, who live in Arroyo de la Miel, support two sisters who live at the hostel, 12-year-old Rita and nine-year-old Gita. Their monthly donation pays for their care, food and education.

Valerie and Steve visited the hostel in February 2007, to meet the girls they sponsor and to help in some way to improve the educational facilities at the hostel, hoping to create a library. Before leaving Spain, the couple raised 300 euros from friends, family and customers of the Café Bar Plaza España in Arroyo de la Miel and would like to thank everyone for their support.

This money was taken to Nepal and, combined with funds raised by other means, they were able to completely transform the study room at the hostel. Bookshelves now line the walls with a good number of English study books, they now have a stereo system, a new computer, wall charts and educational games. These wonderful girls really love and appreciate their educational opportunity, they study in the morning before attending the    local school for five hours a day and study for at least two hours each evening, in a clean, loving and safe environment.

The ultimate hope is that Help 2 Educate will be able to build a new hostel for their exclusive use (their current accommodation is rented) and also to open a shop to assist with the continued support of the girls when their education ends.

If you need any further information, please contact Valerie and Steve on 952 574 400 or check the website www.help2educate.org. They are always looking for sponsors, volunteers or contributions.
