Bribe officer in confession

• 12 Apr 2007 •

The Albufeira Traffic Brigade Headquarters.A POLICE officer from the Albufeira Traffic Brigade has been caught red-handed while trying to receive a 200-euro bribe from a Russian immigrant. The 30-year-old police officer was detained by his commanding officer at the parking lot of a commercial centre in Portimão where he had arranged a meeting with the Russian to receive the money.

The officer has already confessed to a judge and, according to police, was suspended from duty while awaiting trial. A source said this started when the officer was taking part in a patrol to check vehicles and drivers in the area of Vilamoura.

When the 40-year-old Russian immigrant, who is legally working in the Algarve, was stopped, the officer discovered that he was not insured and the vehicle did not have the required inspection stamp. The Russian explained that when the officer was getting ready to issue the fines, he offered to pay him a certain amount of money if he turned a blind eye to the irregularities.

It is believed the officer accepted and arranged to meet the driver to get the money and the driver was later advised by friends to contact the police and report the incident.

It is the second time police officers from the Albufeira Traffic Brigade have been accused of accepting bribes. In 2002, 25 officers were arrested and 10 were found guilty by court.
