TAP is second worst on mishandled baggage
• 12 Apr 2007 •
THE UK-based Air Transport Users Council has published a report on mishandled baggage revealing that the second worst performing AEA (Association of European Airlines) airline in 2006 was Portugal’s leading airline TAP, with and average of 21 bags missing per 1,000 passengers transported, narrowly preceded by British Airways with 23 bags missing per 1,000 passengers.
TAP currently operates 1,400 weekly flights on average to 45 destinations in 26 countries on a modern fleet of 48 Airbus aircraft. According to the report, in 2006, TAP transported almost 7.5 million passengers while British Airways carried more than 45.5 million people on its airplanes.
The AEA publishes its report every quarter, and produces an annual figure at the end of each calendar year. The reports include not only baggage handling performance of its member airlines, but also their performance in other areas.
Airlines operating flights from large airports where many of their passengers take connecting flights appears to show that the risk of mishandled baggage is higher at major hub airports and passengers on connecting flights are exposed to the highest risk of all. Research by SITA, the leading air transport communications and IT solutions provider, appears to confirm this.
According to the SITA website, 61 per cent of instances of mishandled baggage are for connecting passengers. In 2006, airlines of the AEA reported that they had mishandled 15.7 bags for every 1,000 passengers they carried, more than 5.6 million mishandled bags.
The AEA says that 85 per cent of mishandled bags are returned to their passengers within 48 hours. | Return to Top
