World Harmony Run in the Algarve
• 12 Apr 2007 •
FORTY EIGHT European countries, including Portugal are participating in this year’s edition of the World Harmony Run. The European route of the 2007 edition started on March 7 in Lisbon and will end on October 6 in London after an international team of 300,000 runners has covered a distance of 27,000 km.
The Algarve was also included in the route with Ferreiras, Faro and Tavira hosting the regional legs on March 10. The Albufeira Town Council was among the many sponsors of this event and Mayor Desidério Silva was one of the persons who held the torch which, he said: “Is a symbol of peace and friendship for all people in the world”.
The run is a global torch relay that seeks to ‘promote international friendship and point the way to a real oneness-world’. The runners visit schools, community groups, running clubs, and local and national government organisations. At these stops, they celebrate the goal of world harmony as well as recognise people in the community who work towards it.
The running and the co-ordinating team of the World Harmony Run work together with teachers to promote the harmonious living together between people of different cultures, nationalities and beliefs through school presentations and school programs.
According to the organisers of the event, the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team: “When one person hands the torch to the next person, it shows that we all have to work together in order for harmony to happen.”
After Europe, the international team of runners will carry the burning torch, through more than 100 countries around the globe. | Return to Top
