Plans to complete cathedral cause controversy
• 15 May 2008 •
MALAGA Cathedral, known as ‘La Manquita’ (freely translated as ‘Little One-Arm) has only one of the two towers which were included in its original design.
This is because the money that was needed to complete it and which was obtained from taxes from exporting natural raw materials, was re-routed to the United States during the American Revolutionary War, which took place between 1775 and1783.
Now, Malaga Town Hall wants to complete the other tower. Some, such as the dean of the Cathedral, Francisco Garcia Mora, agree and believe that it should be completed. The Cathedral surveyor, Fernando Ramos, believes it would be feasible, although the process of building such a large structure could take many years.
However, no-one can say how the work would be paid for, as funds from the Junta de Andalucia, Central Government and the diocese are currently paying for a new roof to stop the many leaks. Other people believe that the cathedral should stay as it is, as its shortfall makes it unique and enchanting.
They say that the fact that it is not complete is a reflection of historical process and that it doesn’t make the building any less attractive.
