Second case  BSE reported

HEALTH officials said they believe they have identified a teenage Portuguese girl as the country's second case of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob, a disease which is linked to consumption of meat from cattle infected with BSE.



Unpaid tax

THE government aims to collect some 1.6 billion euros in back taxes in 2007, and expects to accelerate the collection of overdue payments through 2009. Finance Minister Teixeira dos Santos said the government was able to beat its goal of 1.5 billion euros in collections of overdue fiscal liabilities in 2006.



Bird flu talks

MEMBERS of the Algarve and Andalucia health authorities met in Seville to discuss closer and wider co-operation, including increased information sharing between the regions in order to deal with a possible bird flu threat.



Chief resigns

THE CHIEF of Madeira´s regional government, Alberto Joan Jardim has resigned in protest to a new law on regional financing. President Cavaco Silva is expected now to dissolve the archipelago´s parliament and call for early elections.
