Obese woman dies after weight-loss surgery

A 40-YEAR-OLD woman who underwent surgery at a Malaga hospital to cure her of obesity has died.

The patient underwent the operation – normally viewed as the last remaining option for morbidly obese people when other treatments and therapies have failed - at the beginning of last month at the Carlos Haya Hospital.

Over the last five years 50 other similar operations have been carried out without incident at the hospital, which is specially accredited for such surgery by the Andalucian Health Service.

Hospital sources said the woman – identified by the initials M V G R – initially underwent surgery for a gastric by-pass, but that her condition worsened one week after the operation.

The hospital has sent its condolences to the woman’s family.
