SINGLE MUMS FIGURE SOARS
• 12 Apr 2007 • ALMOST A third of children in Malaga are now born to single mothers, providing additional proof that traditional local family values are declining.
The startling figures have been revealed by the National Institute of Statistics. Over the last 10 years, the number of illegitimate children in Malaga has more than doubled with statistics in 1995 showing a ratio of 12.92 per cent per 100 born out of wedlock, and the latest figures representing 30.89 per cent.
Sociologists claim that there are two main reasons for the latest increase in single mothers, with the first being that although many couples in Malaga are in stable relationships, the number of marriages has hugely decreased over the last 30 years. Additionally many women choose to remain single but to have children, either through artificial insemination or short term relationships.
The latest statistics also show that many women now wait until they are around 30 years of age before starting a family, and they are also increasingly deciding to have no more than one child.
Looking back 30 years to the days of dictatorship, in 1975 the Spanish Civil Code condemned women who conceived out of wedlock, with just 2.03 per cent of registered births to single mothers at that time.
Nowadays in some parts of Europe, the number of babies born to single mothers is around 50 per cent, with France and some Scandinavian nations having the highest figures. | Return to Top
