Police probe death of fugitive in crash
• 12 Apr 2007 • SPANISH police are examining the scene of a single vehicle car accident in which financial fugitive Mark Langford - who was recently forced to sell his home, yacht and cars to raise money - was killed. As investigations continued, suicide had not been ruled out. Mr Langford, 42, fled to Marbella from England after sacking most of his employees in The Accident Group (TAG), Britain´s biggest personal injury claims firm in 2003, by sending them text messages. The text messages read, “ Urgent. Unfortunately salaries not paid. Please do not contact the office. Full details to follow.”
The sacked employees later discovered that not only were they without jobs, but that Mr Langford and his wife were living off millions he had taken out of TAG in dividends, months before the company folded.
Renting a house on Marbella´s Zagaleta estate, Mr Langford - who died from head injuries hours after the crash on the A7 which did not involve any other vehicle - had in more recent times become depressed after being ordered to attend a bankruptcy hearing in the UK.
In early 2005 after his assets were frozen Mr Langford was pressured to explain how TAG had collapsed owing an estimated 145 million euros shortly after he and his wife Debbie had taken vast sums in dividends. Later he was presented with a 6.1 million euro writ by the British Inland Revenue and his wife a 3.48 million euros writ.
Witnesses recall the businessman turning grey as the bailiffs approached him aboard his 2.2 million euro yacht, Mermaid’s Whisper, and presented him and his wife with the writs. Last month Langford failed to appear at a High Court hearing in London brought against him by HM Revenue and Customs. His lawyer requested an adjournment stating that Mr Langford was suffering “severe mental illness leading to manic depression”.
He was awaiting a further date for the hearing at the time of Tuesday’s crash.
A friend of Mr Langford’s said: “He was not happy. This was a difficult period for him and he was struggling to cope. He very much enjoyed the lavish lifestyle.” | Return to Top
