A first for Picasso enthrals Morocco
• 12 Apr 2007 •
THE CERAMIC works of Picasso, together with engravings and illustrations from his books, are being shown for the first time in Morocco.
Being staged in the Mohamed Drissi Gallery of Contemporary Art in Tangier until June 17, the exhibition has been acclaimed by the Moroccan Minister of Culture, Mohamed Achaari, for providing local people with the opportunity to enjoy the work of the great Spanish artist from Malaga.
The 42 ceramic pieces on show dating from 1947 to 1971 show just one of the techniques the artist used to express his creativity, with the engravings Carmen and The art of bullfighting, as well as several books, included in the display.
The pieces on show are from public and private collections including the Serra de Soller Collection from Mallorca and the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Palma.
Organised by The Cervantes Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Spanish Embassy in Morocco, the exhibition is a reflection of the close relationship between Spain and the North African country.
It was not until Picasso was about 70 years old that he dedicated time to working in ceramics, with him eventually creating 3,500 pieces, including bullfighting, still life, female portrait and burlesque character themes similar to those of his paintings and sculptures. | Return to Top
