Sponsored slim raises money for charity
• 19 Apr 2007 •
JOHN WILLIAMS, a regular Kiss FM listener, approached DJ Sir Owen Gee, presenter of the long running Solid Gold Sunday Show, with the idea of a sponsored slim in aid of local charities. It was readily embraced and the weight loss started on New Year’s Eve.
The charities were chosen by the listeners and immediately Linda George, Owen’s assistant, agreed to join in, swiftly followed by Elaine Saunders, a regular Kiss FM advertiser and Owen’s wife, Val. It was decided that they should adopt their own preferred diets and methods and continue through to Easter Sunday.
The response and interest was overwhelming with pledges made by locals and internet listeners alike. John was the first to reach his target in a very short space of time but managed to maintain it. The ladies took a little longer but achieved their objectives with Val shedding 16 kilos. She raised more than 5,000 euros for her efforts alone and celebrated by buying a pair of size 10 jeans.
On the Easter Sunday Show, John Walker from M and J’S Food and Freezer Centre and Ray Bentley, joint fund raiser for The Silves Fire Brigade, audited the monies realised which resulted in NECI (the school for mentally and physically handicapped in Montinhos da Luz) receiving 2,665 euros, Silves Fire Brigade 988 euros and Santa Casa Misericordia de Albufeira getting 2,651euros towards their bus fund. The bus was delivered to the Pirilampos Orphanage in February and that sum will go a long way to make the final payment. Owen Gee said: “I wish to congratulate the slimmers and thank everyone who donated with a reminder that those who have not yet paid their pledges can still do so.” | Return to Top
