Portimão hosts Breitling MedCup
• 19 Apr 2007 •
THIS year, the Breitling MedCup will visit the Algarve for the first time with the fourth event of the Circuit scheduled to take place in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, near Portimão. This prestigious sailing circuit, constituted by various regattas normally held in the Mediterranean, will move west this year to the Algarve.
After the ‘Copa del Rey’ in Palma de Mallorca, the Portugal Cup will be staged between August 18 and 25, as the penultimate leg of the Breitling Med Cup which finishes in September. The programme for the event will be made up of three days of windward/leeward competitions and two coastal regattas.
The support base for the Breitling Med Cup will be Portimão Marina and the local organisation is being handled by Lagos Sports.
Ignacio Triay, Director of the MedCup circuit commented: “We are delighted that Lagos Sports are organising the event for us at a local level. Their level of expertise in events of this nature is second to none and I am sure that the Trophy of Portugal will be an excellent event. For the Breitling MedCup it is exciting to go to Portugal for the first time and experience the very different sailing conditions, which will no doubt test us all.”
Portimão is the second largest city in the Algarve and is a destination popular for its excellent shopping as well as its wide range of fish restaurants, the latter deriving from its heritage as one of Portugal’s leading fishing centres.
Situated at the mouth of the River Arade, Portimão provides a natural harbour and has been associated with many top international nautical sports events in the past. A new marina has been built next to Praia da Rocha, which first found fame when a group of English writers and intellectuals settled there in the mid 1900s, and the Breitling MedCup fleet will be based at these excellent facilities just outside the city centre. | Return to Top
