Albufeira co-operates with Holland to support handicapped children
• 19 Apr 2007 •
ALBUFEIRA TOWN COUNCIL, in collaboration with the Association for the Support of the Exceptional Person of the Algarve (APEXA), organised an International Sports Tournament for handicapped children.
This initiative saw the participation of 120 people, including the children’s families, team leaders, and experts on this field, as well as Dutch journalists, who came to Albufeira from the Dutch town of Amersfoort.
The event’s main goal was to promote the exchange of experiences between the two cities on the subject of sports activities for handicapped children. The event was considered quite important by Albufeira Town Council because Amersfoort has already great experience in this field.
In fact, Holland is one of the countries in Europe where sports activities for handicapped children have seen better development over the last decades, mainly football, which continues to be children’s favourite sport. The soccer event took place at the Sport Complex of Montechoro where the Portuguese children representing Algarve’s APEXA had a unique opportunity to play with the Dutch teams representing the CJVV Amersfoort and FC Zeewolde.
The party went on throughout the afternoon when the veteran Amersfoort team played the Albufeira Voluntary Fire Brigade. The final result was a tie with each team scoring four goals. Albufeira Town Council was the main sponsor, with Mayor Desidério Silva as one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the event. According to the mayor, this sports event is part of a broader project aiming to strengthen the friendship ties between Albufeira and Amersfoort. | Return to Top
