English group sponsors Algarve culture
• 19 Apr 2007 •
THE Petchey Leisure Group was one of the main sponsors of the 2007 edition of the Albufeira Literature Awards. The group, founded by British entrepreneur Jack Petchey OBE, owns three large tourist resorts in the Albufeira area.
The first prize of 10,000 euros was this year awarded to Rui Costa, a 35 year-old Portuguese author from Oporto, for his new book “A Resistência dos Materiais” (The resistance of the material). Costa said: “Despite not being very old, I have already done quite a bit in my life. I first moved to Coimbra to study law and after I graduated, I went to Lisbon where I worked for seven years at a law firm. At a certain moment I found out that I wasn’t happy with my job, so I left and decided to change my life. I went to England, and in 2004, I got my Master’s degree in Public Health at Leeds University.
“Then I moved to London and it was while I was looking for a job there that I started to write this book. I finished it
after my return to Portugal and now I am very happy to receive this important award because I feel that it will bring a lot of
attention from the public to my book.”
Representing the Petchey Leisure Group, Ana Maria Rosa said: “We would like to congratulate the winner, as well as the other 29 authors who participated in this competition. We would like also to applaud Albufeira Town Council’s idea to create this award because we believe that it can provide an excellent motivation for young Portuguese writers and contribute for the increase of culture related activities in the region. Jack Petchey, through his foundation, has been supporting local schools, sports clubs charities and the firefighters. We are also committed to continue to sponsor cultural activities in the area.” | Return to Top
