Shakespeare Day
• 19 Apr 2007 •
SAO BRAS MUSEUM will be the focal point of Shakespeare Day on April 23. The date coincides with the death of Shakespeare and the Spanish author, Cervantes in 1616.
Proclaimed by UNESCO as World Book Day, it is also the feast day of St George, the patron saint of England and Portugal.
How appropriate to celebrate the special date with numerous happenings, featuring Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets as the subject matter.
Live performances of his most famous scenes will take place in the evening. Screenings of Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice are planned for the afternoon. Musical interludes will include renditions from Shakespearean operas, performed during the day and evening.
Other events planned as part of the programme are sonnet recitals, a Shakespeare quiz, a puppet show co-ordinated by Sally Thirkettle and a production of Pyramus and Thisby – from A Midsummer’s Night Dream – performed by the Aperitivo Theatre Group, directed by Diane Cantillon Ings.
Themed refreshments such as afternoon cream tea and a traditional English supper will be served. Ale and wine will be on sale at the bar throughout the proceedings. Trevor Haywood, a member of ‘Friends’ the museum’s association, inspired Shakespeare Day.
His intention, to lay on a comic production with Shakespeare as the theme, has spiralled into a variety of events to celebrate the bard.
The enthusiasm of Friends of São Brás Museum seems to have no limits as it continues to recruit more members, making it Portugal’s fastest growing cultural group.
On this occasion the focus is of special interest to the British and tickets are on sale to the public.
The museum is on the outskirts of town, on the old Tavira Road, just before Intermarche.
