World Anti-Racism Day successful at schools

• 19 Apr 2007 •

INTERNATIONAL Anti-Racism Day continued to be marked by the local council at Cuevas del Almanzora when schools in the area took part in various activities.

The event was organised by local Councillor for Youth Culture, Yolande Garcia, alongside the Head of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Almeria, Encarna Soriano.  Their aim was to promote anti-racism and use the activities to create and awareness amongst the students of the problems society faces as a result of racism.

Both participated in the day’s events and also led talks and discussion groups including role-play and shock theatre. Alongside, a group debate is was held on the activities which they hoped would help the students to “better understand distinct cultural beliefs and backgrounds” which exist not only in Spain as a whole, but also in their local communities.

Older students were also invited to watch the controversial local film Poniente which is based on racial attacks which took place in El Ejido some years ago. The students then took part in a discussion forum on the film and its implications and relevance to today’s issues and attitudes.
