Sky-high plans for airport rail service

• 19 Apr 2007 •

Sign of change: Malaga-Fuengirola rail link to bePLANS have been approved for the AVE high-speed train to use a new railway station to be built inside Malaga Airport and operational by 2010.

In addition the local rail service between Malaga and Fuengirola is to be improved with trains running every 12 to 15 minutes, as opposed to 30 minutes at present.

Following an agreement signed by the Ministry of Public Works and AENA, the company that manages Spanish airports, the rail lines will be duplicated between Los Prados and Campamento Benitez, with this improving links to Malaga Airport which is at present undergoing major expansion.

An estimated nine million passengers now annually use the local Malaga to Fuengirola rail service. AENA will take charge of the project that will lead to trains passing underground below the Guadalhorce River and a train station being

constructed inside the airport as opposed to the present terminal that leaves passengers 200 metres from the airport.
