Colour coding plan to fight street crime and drug abuse

• 19 Apr 2007 •

COLOUR coding needs to be introduced in 20 areas of Malaga province in the on-going fight against drug and

alcohol abuse, graffiti plus vandalism.

Malaga town hall should additionally ensure that schools introduce combined primary and secondary educational programmes along with workshops, with a range of recreational activities - including football - throughout affected areas. The proposals are spelled out in a report following analysis of problems by GOF, a company managing orientation and formation.

The three colour codings would be red for immediate action, orange for intermediate, and green for primary prevention.

Areas that should be labelled red include:

*Cruz Verde, mainly between the Frailes and Refino streets, where groups “congregate at any hour of the day, committing acts of vandalism.”

*Monte Pavero, especially Genoveses Street, where “gangs of minors and young adults fight with other gangs from nearby areas.”

*La Corta, mainly Camino de La Corta and Avenida de las Musas, designated “a very depressing area that cannot support the high number of marginalised juveniles.”

*Virgen del Pilar Street and Virgen de la Fuensanta, where “excessive numbers of minors spend almost the entire day in the street, with fixtures and private properties in the deteriorated area seriously damaged”.

*Plaza de La Marina, where minors and young adults congregate and consume large amounts of alcohol at evening street parties

Granada has already noted some of the report’s recommendations, introducing 12 people to work with 600 teenage students in a move to eradicate violence both inside and outside classrooms.
