Three day wait for patients in hospital emergency ward

• 19 Apr 2007 •

Hospital beds: Many patients waiting.FIFTY men and women waiting for admission to Malaga Clinical Hospital remained in one room for three days waiting for a room and bed.

Eight were finally found beds while the remainder had to continue to wait in chairs.

Twenty extra beds have now eased delays being faced by patients in the emergency ward, some of whom have waited up to 60 hours to be properly

accommodated following

admission.

The shortage of rooms and beds is being blamed by the hospital authorities on an increased number of emergency ward patients being admitted, fewer discharges and the

continuation of surgeries in the afternoons.

Franciso Reina, a nurse’s trade union representative, said that the extra beds should have been supplied days earlier when the emergency ward first began to face extreme pressure. “We are attending an average to 600 emergency cases a day, of which 20 per cent are admitted. This along with surgery continuing in the afternoon means that we are always limited.”

He also reiterated that his union has proposed that a new hospital be opened in the area.

Unions at the Carlos Haya Hospital in Malaga have also claimed that emergency ward patients there also face congestion and difficulties in being found proper accommodation, with observation rooms even facing problems.
