Patients will receive cancer test results in 15 days
• 19 Apr 2007 • THE Junta de Andalucia has announced that the time taken for test results to come back to patients will be reduced to 15 days and promises chemotherapy, radiotherapy and operations one month after cancer has been confirmed. Patients and their families will also receive psychological treatment, individual rooms and genetic advice. President for the Spanish Cancer Association, Francisco Ruiz Torrent, stated: “The sooner you know, the better. Any steps taken to improve treatment of this disease are welcome.”
Plans are also being made for the renovation of waiting rooms, hospital rooms and treatment areas for these patients to guarantee maximum comfort.
In total, around 16.5 million euros are being invested in technology used in the treatments and a centre dedicated to the genetic investigation of cancer is to be built in Granada, including three centres specialising in the more complex cases of cancer in children.
In addition, the Junta will provide more information on the disease as it is estimated that between five and seven of every 10 cases could have been prevented by following a healthier lifestyle. It is estimated that there will be 28,000 new cancer patients in Andalucia and 18,000 deaths as a result every year.
At the moment, the number of men suffering from cancer is increasing, except in the case of lung and throat cancer, while the percentage of women with skin, breast and colon cancer is also on the rise. | Return to Top
