Thousands shy away from work with a pain in the neck

SEVENTEEN employees in every 100 in Malaga City take on average 52 days sick leave a year.

The main reasons given are neck and back pains, with stress and anxiety running a close second, with the latter according to a doctor often as a result of poor work situations that lead to low self esteem and burn-out.

Women in general take two days sick leave a year more than men according to the 2006 statistics just released by the Spanish Social Security. They cover 600,000 city employees, but do not include figures for the self employed.

When collated, the statistics mean that 8,600 workers in Malaga City were last year off sick every month, with 8,536 away because of illness or incapacity not directly related to their employment. A generally longer recuperation period is reported for the few away because of industrial related sicknesses and illnesses.
