Twenty-one are held in huge money laundering swoop

• 19 Apr 2007 •

POLICE HELICOPTERS plus 230 officers took part in Operation Hidalgo that this week 21 people, including notaries and lawyers, being arrested in Marbella and Malaga City in an alleged money laundering swoop.

A lawyer’s office in Marbella was said to have been at the centre of the investigation which is reported to be part of a parallel police operation in Holland.

The nationality of those arrested in the case, being organised by Instruction Court Two in Marbella, has not been revealed. However, reporting restrictions have been imposed by the judge.

A number of premises were visited during the swoop, including part of the luxurious Hotel Marbella Club, with the laundered money allegedly coming from a network of international organised crime, including drug trafficking and prostitution.

Police investigations are said to be continuing.

It is believed that two notaries who have been implicated in the Malaya case are among those arrested on charges of money laundering.
