Denia rugby |
ON Saturday, Denia Under 20s took on the very strong Abercarve Youth Side in Denia. Abercrave, from South Wales, are currently second in the Welsh second division and will probably be playing rugby in the Welsh youth first division next season. For Denia, fielding players between 16 and 20 years old, this was only their second game as a team and, from the first minute, the task that faced them was clear, losing the first scrum against the head.
But Denia battled hard throughout and had a fair share of possession and, once settled, won most of their own scrums and line outs. But it was the Abercrave backs who were to dominate the day and, although Denia regularly forced the visitors back into their own half, it seemed that the deeper they attacked from, the more dangerous they were. Five first- half tries showed the basic difference in experience between the two sides and the second half was much the same, although Denia tackled well and enjoyed their limited moments in possession to score two much-deserved tries from Jobie and Giuliani before finally succumbing 68-12. Abercrave clearly enjoyed themselves and certainly showed Denia how rugby can be played with pace and support runners and the home side will certainly have learned from the experience.
On Sunday, the Community of Valencia Infantiles (Under 15s) squad came to Denia and, after a morning’s training, played six ten minute sessions against a mixture of Denia Cadetes and Infantiles in preparation for the National Championships next weekend in Madrid. Denia dominated most of the early sessions, denying the Valencia side both possession and territory and certainly giving them plenty of tackling practice. The younger visiting side improved as the day went on and will hopefully take their efforts into the forthcoming tournament, in which Denia will be represented by Pedro,Aitor and Dani.
This weekend, Denia Cadetes are due to play La Vila for the third and fourth place play-off in the Community of Valencia Championship and the senior side are hoping to play a visiting touring team in Denia. Please call or check the website for details.
