Another Porto star joins Chelsea

• 15 May 2008 •

A new Portuguese addition to the Blues: Jose BosinON the back of a 20 million euro deal, Chelsea has won the race to sign the highly-rated Portugal right-back, Jose Bosingwa.

The London team have confirmed on their web site that they have reached agreement with FC Porto for the transfer, adding that Bosingwa is currently in England to discuss personal terms and to undergo a medical. The player is expected to sign a five-year contract this week after the Blues managed to beat off interest from Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

The 25 year-old Congolese player has won the Champions League with Porto and helped them lift four league titles in five years. He played alongside his fellow countrymen, Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira at Porto under Jose Mourinho in the 2003-04 season.

The versatile right-back can also operate in midfield. Bosingwa is a fast, overlapping right-back who has broken into the Portugal side in recent seasons and would be expected to replace Paulo Ferreira as the first choice at Stamford Bridge. Ferreira has signed a new contract with Chelsea a few months ago but the position has been a problem for Chelsea, both under previous manager Jose Mourinho and current boss Avram Grant.

With the arrival of Bosingwa, Chelsea’s Portuguese group will go up to four, with defender Ricardo Carvalho and goalkeeper Hilario making up the former Porto contingent. Bosingwa will play for Portugal in the European Championships next month, but was born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He moved to Seia, in central Portugal when he was young. He began his career mainly playing in midfield for Boavista, for whom he made more than 40 appearances. He moved to FC Porto in 2003.

Three years ago, Bosingwa was involved in a serious car accident when his jeep skidded off the motorway and rolled down an embankment before bursting into flames. He was with four other players at the time, but all escaped alive. However, Sandro Luis had to have his left foot amputated as a result of the accident.
