Denia Rugby Club

• 15 May 2008 •

Denia Rugby Club this weekend participated on their very own Triple Crown Tournament with visiting teams from Ireland, England and Wales all in action in Denia.

Denia Under 15s played two games against De La Salle Palmerston Rugby Club Under 14s from Dublin. Both were very hard fought affairs with the Irish side once against demonstrating how several years playing together through the age groups creates a team capable of beating bigger stronger sides.

On Thursday evening the Irish won 28-0, mainly due to a 21-0 half time lead which saw Denia much more competitive in the Second half. On Saturday the game was more even with a last minute try securing a flattering 29-12 victory for DLSP.

The English came to Denia on Friday evening in the shape of May & Baker from Essex. Denia's Senior side started the stronger taking a 15-5 lead, but the visitors rallied to go ahead 19-15 minutes before halftime before a converted try edged Denia back in front 22-19.

The second half was very free flowing with neither side really taking advantage of their opportunities, but Denia edged ahead to lead 29-26 and eventually ran out winners 36-33.

However, once again the advantage of being a regular team saw the Welsh increasingly dominant although a slender 17-14 half time lead of was a fair reflection of the first half and the enterprise and commitment of the Denia side. The visitors demonstrated the simplicity of the game - strong forward drives being finished off with flowing back moves to add a handful of tries for a comfortable 48-14 victory.

Rugby was undoubtedly the winner in Denia this weekend and the home side fielded no less that 70 different players in the four matches. This coming weekend sees a Triangular Tournament between Denia, Ross on Wye and Brighton starting at 2pm on Saturday
