Porto punished in football scandal
• 15 May 2008 • IN Portugal's biggest football scandal ever, The disciplinary committee of the Portuguese Liga has come down hard on those found guilty in the corruption case named the ‘Final Whistle’.
FC Porto lost six points for trying to bribe referees in two games during the 2003-04 season. Despite the points deduction, due to the 20 points advantage the team was holding over second-placed Sporting Lisbon, Porto was able to claim their third straight league championship.
President, Pinto da Costa, was suspended for two years and the club fined 150,000 euros. The committee also ruled that Boavista be relegated to the second division and former president, Joao Loureiro, suspended for four years. The president of Uniao Leiria, Joao Bartolomeu, received a one-year suspension and the team lost points. Heavy fines have also been imposed for attempting to bribe referees, which all three clubs denied.
Five referees were found guilty of corruption, with suspensions ranging from 30 months to six years. The committee questioned 85 people during the investigation and compiled a case file containing almost 1,000 pages. | Return to Top
