THE FIVE day Mallorca Challenge cycle race will go ahead following a cash injection from the Balearic government’s tourism department. The Mallorca Challenge is the traditional opening race of Spain’s cycling calendar, but had been in jeopardy due to shortage of financial backing.
This is good news for the sport of cycling in Spain which has been struggling with the news of a series of doping allegations, and the current financial climate.
Two other races in Spain have already suffered due to the financial problems in securing sponsorship: the five day Volta a Communidad Valenciana will not be going ahead this year, and the Vuelta a Murcia has been shortened from five days to three days.
The Mallorca Challenge will run from February 6 to 10.
