Elsur employees maintain hunger strike over wages

THREE employees from El Ejido municipal services company Elsur have been on hunger strike for more than a week in protest over outstanding wages. The workers are yet to receive their wages from November and December, plus their bonus payment for 2010. Some 50 employees are owed an average of €3,800 each, and despite holding meetings with management, no agreement was reached.

Elsur allegedly intends to present a layoff plan for their 370 employees to the Junta de Andalucia. One of the three strikers was told he should be taken to hospital, but he refused.

Meanwhile, the employees say that they have not been contacted by Elsur or by the town hall, except for a letter some time back to say they were ‘sorry’ and claiming the town hall had not paid the company, so it could not pay its staff.

Another protest will be held soon.
