Mojacar councillors sacked over car park controversy

MOJACAR Mayor Rosa Maria Cano expelled two members of her team, allegedly because they planned to vote against the plans for the controversial 37-space car park. Carlos Cervantes (Asamblea Izquierdista) and Angel Medina (Ciudadanos Europeos) were expelled ahead of the plenary meeting at which the plans were to be discussed and which was later cancelled.

This leaves Cano in the minority, as only five of the 13 councillors on the corporation belong to the governing team, five from the Partido Popular, and one from Grupo Independiente de Almeria.

The former tourism councillor, Angel Medina, has said that from now until the municipal elections are held in May, Rosa Maria Cano will be watched closely because “strange things” are going on and the opposition wants to ensure that nothing illegal is done, press reports say.

Medina plans to reveal how much Cano has spent on sports, culture, festivities and tourism.

He also says that he was going to vote against the project for the car park, simply because he hadn’t had time to study it and was called to the meeting with just 24 hours.
