Sailing Association Mar Menor Open Day

ON Friday February 25 the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) is holding an Open Day at the jetty of CAR ‘Infant Christina’, Los Narejos, from 11am. The highlight of this occasion is the launch of their new RIB which will be used as the safety boat in their next series of races starting in March.

There will be an opportunity for visitors to try out some of the sailing options.

SAMM membership has now passed 135 and they meet once a month on the second Wednesday at 11am, at the Las Claras Community Centre, Calle Irene, Los Narejos, just north of Los Alcázares.

Non-members of all nationalities are always welcome to attend to learn more about them and join if they wish. They normally have a guest speaker, who talks on a topic of interest to sailors.

SAMM comprises a number of groups which cater for different classes of sailing boats. There is a group for larger cruising yachts, dinghy sailing, boat sharing, one metre remote control boats, catamaran.

They also organise training to improving our sailing skills and do a lot of their own repair work.

In 2009 they established a Sailability group equipped with special boats designed to take one disabled person accompanied by an able-bodied person.

They are working with the UK Disabled Sailing Association and Fundación También, the Spanish equivalent, on this venture.

Longer sailing trips are envisaged throughout the summer such as a flotilla cruise to the Balearics and weekend Boat Owners Group trips along the Mediterranean coast.

Motor boats are also represented within the membership. They have a boat storage area south of Los Alcázares and close to the Mar Menor with a launching site. Trips are also arranged to local places of interest and are all advertised in the Events Calendar on the website.
