ALMERIA was the Spanish province with most murdered women in 2010, official figures show. Last year, five women died at the hands of their partners or former partners in the province. According to the General Council for Judicial Power (CGPJ), the number of women killed by their partners compared to the total population of women over the age of fifteen, is 13.60 out of a million in Almeria, followed by Avila, with 13.45 per million.
In 70 per cent of cases, the women are killed in their homes, and in 35 per cent of cases, the murder weapon is a knife, followed by 18 per cent using a gun.
In the whole of Andalucia, six out of ten of the victims was foreign, and of the 17 victims in Andalucia in 2010, only three had previously reported their killers for domestic violence.
Meanwhile, surveys carried out by the Women’s Institute reveal that 32 per cent of young men consider it normal to force their partner to have sex, and 53 per cent find violence justified in certain cases. Twelve per cent admitted that at some point, they have pushed or hit their partners.
