Farmer’s carelessness leads to warehouse fire

SALOBREÑA – A FIRE in a warehouse on La Gasolinera Industrial Estate in Salobreña caused material damage worth €150,000 and several firemen had to be treated for smoke inhalation and heatstrokes.

The fire was caused by a farmer burning branches and leaves cut from trees on his property, but rapidly spread due to strong winds. It caused a thick column of smoke, 100 metres tall, which could be seen for 15 kilometres and provoked alarm in the area.

Hundreds of boxes were piled up behind the Frutas Manzanas warehouse which further boosted the fire, and the combustion of plastic caused the smoke to turn black.

Thanks to the rapid action of the fire department, the fire did not spread to a nearby petrol station.
