A DISTRESSED phone call to Alicante from a Romanian girl in Italy has revealed a potential Romanian mafia prostitution ring. The girl had been promised work at a pizzeria in Rome, but instead she was allegedly forced into prostitution each night on the streets of Rome and during the day is being kept with other girls in a shantytown on the outskirts of the Italian capital.
Any money they made each night is pocketed by the pimps who threaten the girls and beat them up. The victims were allowed to talk to their families once a week to tell them that all was well in Italy.
It was in one of those conversations that the victim was able to get across to her sister, who lives in Alicante, what was really going on, where she was being kept.
She begged that her situation be reported to the Spanish police because she had no way of escape and was too frightened to call the Italian police.
Her sister reported the matter to the police in Alicante and the investigating judge assigned to the case has contacted the Italian authorities, although at the time of going to press it was not known if the victim had been rescued.
