SO far this year, 14 women have been killed by their partners; only three of them had made reports of domestic abuse. This statistic was revealed during a speech by the president of the Alicante Provincial High Court, Vicente Magro, at a conference in Javea organized by the Equality Department to commemorate International Women’s Day last Tuesday.
Violence is “socially undesirable and should be prosecuted and condemned,” he stated and highlighted the “danger” to women who have to live with their “assailant”.
Since 2004, the Provincial High Court has been a pioneer in rehabilitation programs.
These programs assist first time abusers who have been sentenced to less than two years, provided this is their first conviction.
