Environmentalists demand Cannilas quarry closure

ENVIRONMENTALISTS in the Axarquia area are demanding that La Montosa quarry, in Canillas de Aceituno, be closed to prevent damage to the flora and fauna. The Axarquia Nature Studies Department, GENA-Ecologistas en Accion, has reported that the quarry, which in the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, is being expanded constantly with no type of control on the effects this is having on the environment.

Their president, Rafael Yus, says that several environmentalists have reported the damage which the quarry and the constant procession of lorries is doing to the forest.

In 2000, the quarry covered an area of 29,300m2, but by 2010, the area had increased by 352 per cent, to 132,700m2.

The authorization to run the quarry was granted before the area was classified as a natural park, therefore GENA believes that the authorities should control the damage it is causing.
