SOCIALIST (PSOE) Pilar Ortiz Hidalgo was named the new mayor of Canillas de Aceituno on Monday, becoming the town’s first female mayor. She has taken over from Jose Manuel Aranda, mayor since 1999, who resigned on March 16 after being disqualified from public office for nine years for town planning offences.
Ortiz, who has served as first deputy mayor for the last two terms, was voted in by the six PSOE councillors, the only PA representative was absent, while the four PP representatives voted for their spokesman Vicente Campos.
She will be mayor until the mayoral elections, which are less than two months away, and has called on the opposition groups to put aside their political differences and work together “harmoniously” until May 22.
