VIOLENCE came again to the streets of Benidorm when a young football supporter died after being stabbed. The victim was a 25-year-old male form Pedreguer who had come into Benidorm with friends to see the final of the Copa del Rey between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The incident occurred at around 5am after the game when an altercation started in Calle Thomas Ortuno. The victim shouted ‘viva Barca’ and was attacked, he died almost immediately after suffering a single stab wound. Although emergency services arrived almost immediately the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
More than 50 officers were deployed in an operation to trace the assailant.
Around 140 people were questioned, six people interviewed and 60 local properties visited. Within 12 hours the police had a suspect in custody. The arrested man was a 39-year-old who police had narrowed down as the prime suspect during their intense enquiries.
When a search warrant was granted by the courts in the afternoon the police entered the suspect’s apartment and discovered a knife which police believe may be the murder weapon, together with bloodstained clothes, both of which were removed for forensic analysis.
The arrested man has previous convictions according to sources, and he is currently being held without bail pending formal appearance before the court,
