GUILLERMO PEREZ, the mayor of Alcaucín in Malaga Province passed away on Monday, aged 48. Perez had been battling lung cancer for just two months and despite his illness had decided to opt for re-election in the upcoming elections this Sunday.
The first deputy mayor, Domingo Lozano, was shocked and saddened at the news, especially of someone so young and described Perez as “a great colleague and person”. He also announced that the town has declared two days of mourning in honour of the mayor.
Perez, accepted the role in 2009 after the arrest of former mayor, Jose Manuel Martin in an urban corruption operation called ‘arcos’.
