FOUR Almuñecar residents have each been sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay a fine of €540 for causing a forest fire. A Motril court ruled that in February 2005 they did not properly extinguish a fire they had started to burn olive tree branches collected after pruning trees in their farm.

They made the fire less than two metres from a forest and only used some sand and stones to extinguish the fire once they finished with it.Later on the wind reignited the ashes and the fire spread.
