Fires in Vega Baja district leaves 200 rabbits dead

FIRE-FIGHTERS fought three fires within a 24-hour period in the Vega Baja district. One of the fires was started on purpose and another caused the death of 200 rabbits.

The 25-year-old resident of a second storey apartment in Torrevieja allegedly set fire to his mattress, closed the bedroom door and called emergency services “to get attention,” he told Guardia Civil officers when they arrested him.

Nobody was injured but dozens of neighbours had to be evacuated from the building as a precaution. It took firefighters one-and-a-half-hours to put out the flames. Then, a fire that originated on the second floor of a house in Avendia Jerez de la Frontera in Rojales, burnt down part of the building.

Again, nobody was injured, but the resident of the property could not access it until a day later. Meanwhile, 200 rabbits burned to death in a fire at a farm in Almoradi that was caused by a cigarette that was not put out properly. No humans were harmed in the flames.
