Medieval fair in Velez Blanco

THE second ‘Feria del Marquesado de los Velez’ will be held in Velez Blanco this weekend, as well as the popular medieval market.

The towns which belonged to the Marquisate between the 16th and 18th centuries, Albanchez, Albox, Arboleas, Benitagla, Cantoria, Chirivel, Cuevas de Almanzora, Maria, Oria, Partaloa, Taberno, Velez Rubio, Velez Blanco and Zurgena, are invited to get together and remember their past.

The title of Marquis of Velez was given to Queen Juana I (La Loca) to Pedro Fajardo y Chacon in 1507. He was the head of the powerful Fajardo family from Murcia. It was held by members of the ‘House of Velez’ until 1713 when it was passed on to other families and finally to the House of Medina Sidonia in 1779.

There will be workshops, musical performances, parades, plays, exhibitions with birds of prey and stalls selling all kinds of goods available at the fair.
