A 39-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by Guardia Civil when he was lighting a fire within the Sierra de Andujar Natural Park in Jaen.

He was lighting the fire at the side of a road which leads to El Encinarejo reservoir and has been charged with starting a forest fire. When he saw the Guardia Civil he fled the scene but the Guardia Civil set up an operation to find him and he was arrested an hour later.

Thanks to the quick response of the Guardia Civil and firemen, the fire only affected 1,700 square metres of land.

Had the Guardia Civil not caught him in the act, the fire would have destroyed animals and plants as well as endangering the hundreds of people enjoying the nature park, as the fire was in an area with only one access route.
