27,858 hectares destroyed by fire in Spain

MORE than 27,858 hectares of land have been destroyed by fire in Spain up to July 10 this year, according to the Ministry for the Environment.

This is 28.87 per cent less than the average for the past decade, but 22.27 per cent more than over the same period last year.

Between June 30 and July 10, 1,465 hectares have been destroyed in 809 fires throughout Spain. Some 4,830 were small fires which affected less than a hectare and the rest affected a larger area.  The total area destroyed amounts to 0.101 per cent of the total surface of Spain, most of which were bush and mountain areas.
