THE Food Bank in the Balearic Islands is nearly empty and is appealing to the public for urgent food donations, according to its president Manuel Marco.
This is because the number of associations who claim help from them has grown faster – reaching more than 100 – than the donations received.
In 2007 these associations serviced around 4,900 people; currently this number reaches about 40,000. Most of the food is donated by the major supermarkets and various cooperatives.
More than 20 volunteers from the Food Bank are now going to check to ensure that these associations that are asking for the food are actually using it for the intended purposes.
