Sunday brunch at Mijas Playa

Special offer just €20 per person

A LITTLE birdie told me that the Mijas Playa, one of the Coast’s leading establishments has opened a new outside bar. I like al fresco everything, so Barrie and I popped down there on Sunday to find out about the new bar and try their Sunday lunch menu.

The new outside bar is situated by the entrance, and it’s not just a bar, there is a lovely covered seating area too. A saxophonist was playing lovely music and singing along beautifully – a truly blissful setting and ambiance, and one that makes you really appreciate the beauty of the Coast. A long call from the hustle and bustle of the UK.

Four guests came and sat near us and we got chatting. They are from Liverpool and Manchester and love the Mijas Playa and were going on about other restaurants they visit. I promised them a mention if they could recommend a good restaurant that I hadn’t already reviewed. They knew two – so thank you to Dennis, Norma, Mary and Howard!

Now it was time to put the lunch to the test. Mijas Playa has a new format for lunch in the summer. A self service buffet for the starters and then a choice of four meat dishes, and fish.

We opted for the leg of lamb. Barrie asked for extra roast potatoes.

The buffet for the starters was excellent.

Lovely smoked salmon and prawns, some cold meats, salad and a whole cooked salmon.  Terrific starters. I chose some sliced chicken which was beautifully cooked and very succulent. Barrie raved about the salmon. Then the leg of lambs arrived. Enormous. Very well cooked and presented, delicious. With vegetables, unusual in Spain.

Trinnie looked after us well, she is a good member of staff. Then pudding time – back to the buffet for a selection of apple strudle, bread and butter pudding, and fresh fruit salad. Barrie ordered some ice cream too. All jolly good. Benjamin arrived from the EWN with a table of 20. The word was already out!

On the way out we popped by to see how the North of England gang had enjoyed their lunch.

Like us, they were very impressed with the new format of the Mijas Summer Sunday brunch, and adored their fish.

Well done to the Mijas Playa for putting on a great spread.

My husband and I just love the Mijas Playa. The decor is wonderful, the service friendly and elegant and the food scrumptious. In the above article I was looking for the date of the review but couldn’t find it. I supposed it must be quite recent, though. My husband and I hosted a party for 13 there in February 2012. We had a set menu with salmon mousse, chateubriand and dessert. The chateubriands were simply excellent. I hate this thin meat they serve everywhere on the coast, but these were thick and juicy and very tender. Being a Norwegian I was very observant abut the serving of wine (very expensive in Norway), but they didn’t stint on it in any way I could see, so “as much as we could drink” turned out to be just that. Very good stuff too. We also had coffe avec and drinks afterwards for those who wanted it. The bill was as expected, nt very expensive according to Norwegian standards, and we will definitely repeat the experience. This was not our first evening at the Mijas Playa and the excellent food and service we had enjoyed there earlier, was of course the reason we chose it as a venue to host our party.
