Santa Pola lotto scammers arrested

THREE Spaniards were arrested in Santa Pola for allegedly trying to scam an elderly man.

The scam is known as ‘tocomocho’ and entails the conman convincing the victim that he is in possession of a winning lottery ticket but for some reason cannot collect the winnings. They then ask for the victim to buy the tickets for less than the prize money is worth.

In this case the detainees – two men and a woman – allegedly approached the old man and tried to sell him five coupons corresponding to the winning prize of €36,000. The elderly man went to his residence to get his bank book where he told his grandson who alerted the Guardia Civil
