A GAY association is said to be ‘outraged’ at the proposal of Moclinejo becoming an exclusively ‘gay village’.
If this proposal, put forth by the Expogays Fair organizer, is approved, the village could be painted pink and 600 ‘gay’ style homes built, doubling the number of properties.
“It is discriminatory and segregates people for purely political and economic reasons,” said Salvador Rubio, president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Collective, COLEGA.
“This will not promote equal opportunity, it will create ghettos,” he said. “We fight for the freedom of individuals so that they can freely decide where they want to live.”
Meanwhile, Frigiliana Town Hall’s concept would seem to be more in line with this view of ‘free choice’. Instead of becoming a ‘gay village’ business association Aecpaf proposes attracting gay tourism by specializing in gay weddings.
Hotel rooms would be specially adapted to gay tastes and certain discounts offered to gay couples in the old town. This week the town’s Cultural Centre will be hosting its fourth gay wedding.
These proposals will be presented at the Expogays Fair in Torremolinos between October 14 and 16.
