Colombus' missing hand turns up in Pontevedra

A RESIDENT of Pontevedra has turned in the hand from a statue of Columbus which disappeared 30 years ago.

The man, who took the hand to the Faro de Vigo newspaper, explained that when the school term ended in 1982, he and some friends went to celebrate near the local Fuente de las Palmeras.

During their celebration, one of their backpacks accidentally got caught on the statue’s hand, which broke off, and fearing reprisals, one of them, 13 at the time, took it and hid it.

He is now 43 and is a father himself, and says he never found the right moment to hand it in. It is now with the Local Police and the local court has been informed.
