Fancy yourself as the Cincinnati Kid?

I GOT a bit nostalgic remembering and talking about Edward G Robinson playing the part of Lancey Howard ‘The Man’ in the Cincinnati Kid.

What a film, one of my all time favourites and the first real poker film to hit the big screen. Although it wasn’t Texas hold-em, it was in fact 5-card stud, the drama and excitement was a treat to watch as the story and the subsequent game unfolded.

Steve McQueen played the young, handsome, upstart, man-about-town, cheeky gambler Eric ‘The Kid’ Stoner and Edward G Robinson the elder statesman of the table.

Immaculate in his attire and manners of a true gentleman, and someone that could actually make the game look respectable.

A bit like ¡Texas Dolly¡ Doyle Brunson and Daniel Negreanu, the cheeky kid in today’s modern game. Throw in ‘Lady Fingers’ and ‘Shooter’ the mechanics, the dealers.

Chuck in some added spice from the harlot femme fatale ‘Melba’ and some bitter jealousy from the rich nasty local businessman, and loser of  a lot of money to ‘The man’ in a previous game ‘Slade’ and now the scene is set for a truly unforgettable film.

If you haven’t seen the film, I am not going to spoil it for you but just to quote the best line ever: “You’re good Kid, your good. But while I’m around, you’re always going to be second best”; a must-watch.

So if you fancy taking your chances at being a Cincinnati Kid, then get up to Casino Marbella this weekend for the Marbella Classic and a chance to win your share of the €80,000 estimated prize pool. Note the new earlier starting time of 5pm and buena suerte to all.
